Life these days seems to be on a perpetual fast track. With the constant hustle and bustle, finding time to prepare a meal, let alone several, can feel like an impossible task. The age-old tradition of cooking from scratch often gets brushed aside as a chore, but let me tell you, there’s a world of wonder waiting to be discovered in the kitchen.
Today on the blog, I want to break down all the myths about cooking from scratch. I absolutely cannot imagine my life without homemade food and I view it as not just a better way to eat, but a joy that makes my life full. I can’t wait to share it with you all!
Five Reasons Cooking From Scratch Is Absolutely Worth It
Without sounding too dramatic, cooking from scratch has truly changed my life in more ways than I can count. I’ve found a love for the kitchen I cannot truly describe, plus it makes me feel good knowing our family is eating whole ingredients.
If you want to begin this journey for yourself, but find it difficult to start, check out my Staples Made Simple Recipe Guide! I’ll help guide you through the process to transforming your kitchen into a healthy and happy place to be.
1. Control Over Ingredients
When you cook from scratch, you have complete control over every ingredient put in your dish. Fresh and healthy whole foods are much easier to swap out over processed, additives, preservatives, and excessive stuff that just isn’t good for you. Cooking from scratch allows you to eat and create meals that your body will thank you for years down the line.
2. Meal Customization
Cooking from scratch allows you to customize your meals to suit your liking! It’s fun to experiment with different herbs, spices, and seasonings to create unique and delicious flavors. Plus, you can easily adjust recipes to dietary needs, ensuring everyone at the table can enjoy. My entire family (yes, the kids included) have really expanded our palettes to find foods we enjoy way more than we all thought.
3. Economical & Eco-Friendly
Pre-packaged foods from the supermarket and take-out from your local restaurants can be expensive. By purchasing high-quality ingredients in bulk and preparing meals at home, you can save tons of money in the long run. Plus, you can make larger portions for leftovers. This helps reduce food waste, and who doesn’t love a pre-made, healthy meal? I know we all do.
4. Reignite The Lost Art of Cooking
Cooking from scratch is a lost art that I believe we all need to rediscover. As you practice and experiment with different recipes, techniques, and ingredients, you become more confident and proficient in the kitchen. This leads to a sense of fulfillment and enjoyment as you create delicious meals for yourself and your loved ones.
5. Bring Friends & Family Together
One thing I know for sure is that cooking from scratch brings people together. Whether you’re cooking for your family, friends, or loved ones, preparing meals together fosters a sense of connection and creates lasting memories. Some of my most cherished memories from childhood are cooking in the kitchen with my dad and grandmother.
Now, I cook with my kids all around me, giggling, playing, and tugging at my apron. It’s these moments I’ve come to treasure and I hope they carry these memories with them for the rest of their lives.
Cooking From Scratch Should Be Fun!
Making food with your own two hands is truly rewarding, to say the least! However, it’s important to remember that perfection isn’t the goal. There are moments when you may find yourself in a pinch and need a quick fix from the store, and that’s okay. I can’t count the times when my family and I are out running errands, the kids are hungry, and I forgot to prep something for dinner. So, I opt to grab something quick and pre-prepared instead of making it from scratch.
What truly matters is the overall consistency and the intention to prioritize homemade cooking as much as possible. So don’t be hard on yourself! Find a balance that works for you between convenience and the joy of creating delicious meals from scratch.
