Why Make Homemade Whipped Cream?

Store-bought whipped cream is often filled with unhealthy ingredients– like carrageenan, canola oil, artificial flavoring, preservatives and more!

My homemade whipped cream uses all natural ingredients, and tastes even better than the store-bought stuff.

With this healthier version of whipped cream, you’ll feel more than happy to serve it to your kids, or top off your morning coffee with a dollop.

So if you’re still getting your whipped cream from the supermarket– then you need my homemade recipe!

Homemade Whipped Cream Ingredients

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp sugar of choice (powdered sugar, maple syrup, or honey)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

What You’ll Need

To make homemade whipped cream, you’ll need a big mixing bowl, and an electric mixer.

You can use a kitchen aid, a hand mixer, or if you don’t have either– a good old fashioned whisk will do the trick!

However, if you are using a whisk, the process will take some extra effort and time!

How to Make Homemade Whipped Cream

1. Chill your mixing bowl and beaters or whisk attachment in the fridge for about 15 minutes beforehand.

2. Pour cold heavy cream into the chilled mixing bowl and begin to beat with an electric mixer on medium-high speed.

3. Pour cold heavy cream into the chilled mixing bowl and begin to beat with an electric mixer on medium-high speed.

4. Once the cream begins to thicken, gradually add in the sugar, while continuing to beat the cream.

5. If desired, add in vanilla extract and continue beating until soft peaks form. (Be careful not to overbeat the cream! Stop beating once you achieve a smooth and fluffy consistency).

Use immediately or cover tightly and chill in the fridge for up to 1-2 days. You can freeze homemade whipped cream, however it does change the texture a bit!

Tips for Success

  • Start with cold heavy cream, and a cold mixing bowl and mixer. The colder the cream and equipment, the easier it will be to whip!
  • Use medium-high speed. This speed creates the perfect fluffy texture. It is easy to overbeat the cream on high speed, and low speed will under-whip the cream.
  • Be aware of quantity. 1 cup of heavy cream produces 2 cups of whipped cream, so keep that in mind when choosing how many batches to make!
  • Keep a close eye on the mixer. If using a kitchen aid or stand mixer, it’s easy to walk away. But when making whipped cream– every second counts. Don’t let your cream get over-beaten by taking your eye off the mixer!

Homemade Whipped Cream Questions & Answers

How Do I Fix Over-Whipped Cream?

If you accidentally over-whip your cream, don’t fret. Just put the mixer on low or whisk by hand, and slowly drizzle in 1 tbsp of cold heavy cream until your mixture smooths out and begins to get fluffy again.

Can I Adjust the Sweetness?

One of the best parts of making DIY whipped cream is tailoring it to your liking! Add 1 tbsp less or 1 tbsp more of the recommended sugar amount to alter the sweetness levels of your whipped cream.

How Long Does Homemade Whipped Cream Last?

To get the most fluffy whipped cream, it’s best to use it right away! However, you can store the whipped cream in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days.

Can I Pipe the Whipped Cream Onto Desserts?

Absolutely! Make sure if you are piping the whipped cream onto a baked good, that the baked good has cooled down entirely beforehand. Pipe the whipped cream on right before serving for best results!

Can I Freeze It?

Yes, you can freeze whipped cream! Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to two months. When ready to use, allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight beforehand. Keep in mind, the texture will not be the same as freshly whipped cream.
