One of my most beloved health secrets is bone broth. I’m sure you’ve heard whispers of the miracles of this homemade soup, but also so much mystery over how to make it correctly. It’s much easier than you think!
Today, I can’t wait to share my simple and delicious bone broth recipe! Whether you prefer chicken or beef bone broth, I have the steps to make both using the same ingredients. It’s a perfect combination of flavors and spices to make a bone brother you’ll enjoy everyday.
What’s The Deal With Bone Broth?
The hype around bone broth seems to be everywhere these days. I am absolutely here for it! Bone broth isn’t just your average soup base – it’s a powerhouse of nutrients packed into a comforting, flavorful liquid. Picture simmering bones, vegetables, herbs, and spices together, creating a brew that’s not only delicious, but also packed with health benefits.
Health Benefits Include:
- Gut Health: One of the shining stars of bone broth is its ability to support gut health. The collagen and gelatin found in bone broth can help to soothe and repair the lining of the digestive tract, promoting better digestion and nutrient absorption.
- Joint Support: Ever heard the phrase “good for the bones”? Well, bone broth takes that saying quite literally. It’s loaded with minerals like calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are essential for maintaining strong and healthy bones and joints.
- Immune Boost: Feeling under the weather? A warm cup of bone broth might just do the trick. It’s rich in amino acids like glycine and proline, which play a role in supporting a healthy immune system and reducing inflammation.
- Skin Glow: Move over, expensive skincare products – bone broth is here to give you that radiant glow from within. The collagen content in bone broth can help to improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and promote a youthful complexion.
- Hydration: Forget plain old water – bone broth is like a supercharged hydration elixir. It’s packed with electrolytes like potassium and sodium, making it a nourishing and hydrating option, especially after a tough workout or during hot summer days.
Simple and Delicious Bone Broth Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 2 to 3 pounds of chicken or beef bones
- 1 onion, quartered
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 4 cloves of garlic, smashed
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (helps extract minerals from the bones)
- 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
- Herbs of choice (parsley, oregano, etc…)
- Enough water to cover everything
Chicken Bone Broth Recipe Steps:
- Place the chicken bones, onion, carrots, garlic, apple cider vinegar, salt and black peppercorns in an Instant Pot.
- Add enough water to cover bones and vegetables, but not too much to go over the fill line.
- Close the lid and set the valve to sealing position.
- Select “Soup” or “Manual” setting and set cooking time to 120 minutes (2 hours) on high pressure.
- Once cooking time is up, allow the pressure to release naturally for 15-20 minutes. Then, carefully perform a quick release for any remaining pressure.
- Use a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the broth, removing bones and vegetables. Discard solids.
- Let the broth cool for a bit, then transfer it to storage containers.
Beef Bone Broth Recipe Steps:
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit (200 degrees celsius). Place beef bones on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for about 30 minutes, or until browned.
- Transfer roasted bones to the Instant Pot. Add in onion, carrots, garlic, apple cider vinegar, salt and black peppercorns.

Common FAQs:
What if I don’t have an Instant Pot?
I personally love my Instant Pot for a quicker time frame, but you can easily do this recipe in a stovetop or Crock Pot. In each of these, it will take a full 24 hours to release all the nutrients into your bone broth.
How long does the bone broth last?
If you want to exclusively keep your bone broth in the fridge, it’s shelf life is 5 days. If you want to freeze it for a longer keep, I wouldn’t recommend anything over 10 days.
How should I store it?
Personally, I’m a huge mason jar fan. They allow for an easy serving size to warm up (if you prefer a warm bone broth) without having to individually dish out your amount each time.
