With my foolproof recipe, you’ll never need to buy burger buns from the store again. And once you get the hang of it, these hamburger buns will quickly become your go-to for burgers and sandwiches year round.

I know that bread baking can seem intimidating, but this recipe is easy to follow, and comes out perfect every time.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

You don’t need any fancy equipment. Though you can use a stand mixer to knead the dough for this recipe— it’s not required. You can make perfectly delicious hamburger buns at home by kneading the dough the old fashioned way— with your hands!

These hamburger buns are made from healthy, wholesome ingredients. Store-bought hamburger buns are often made with unhealthy ingredients like enriched flour, preservatives, soybean oil, and dough conditioners. These homemade hamburger buns are made with simple ingredients— like flour, yeast, butter, milk, eggs, and sugar. No additives, no junk— just real food.

They come out perfect every time. These homemade hamburger buns come out buttery, fluffy, pillowy, and just absolutely delicious every single time. This is a recipe that once you try— you will never go back to buying store-bought buns!

Ingredients

  • Flour- For this recipe, you can use all-purpose flour or bread flour. All-purpose flour will create a lighter, fluffier bun, while bread flour will create a chewier bun.
  • Yeast- You will need active, dry yeast for this recipe. Always check the yeast package to make sure it hasn’t expired, otherwise the dough may not rise properly.
  • Water- Warm water is used to activate the yeast. Not too cold and not too hot. Between 100°F-115°F is a good temperature range to aim for.
  • Sugar- You can use cane sugar, maple syrup, or even honey to lightly sweeten this hamburger bun recipe.
  • Milk- A small amount of warm milk is added to the recipe to create the perfect moisture level. Whole milk is best.
  • Butter- I prefer to use unsalted butter to enrich the dough and ensure the buns do not come out too salty. You can substitute with salted butter if that’s all you have on hand. Just be sure to skip the added salt.
  • Egg- You will need 2 eggs for this recipe. One egg is added to this recipe to contribute to the richness and moisture of the buns, while the other is used for an egg wash.
  • Salt- Salt enhances the flavor of these homemade hamburger buns. I recommend using a high-quality sea salt.
  • Sesame Seeds-  Adding sesame seeds to your hamburger buns is optional, but highly recommended!

How to Make Homemade Hamburger Buns

1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. If using a stand mixer, you can do this step directly in the stand mixer bowl with the dough hook attached.

2. Add the flour, sugar, salt, warm milk, melted butter, and 1 egg to the bowl and mix together until a dough begins to form.

3. If using a stand mixer, put the mixer on medium to knead for about 5-7 minutes. If not using a mixer, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

4. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it doubles in size.

5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.

6. Place the dough balls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Leaving a little space between each bun. Cover them with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.

7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and make your egg wash by beating together 1 large egg with 1 tbsp water. Brush the tops of the buns with egg wash. Add sesame seeds if desired.

8. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until they turn golden brown.

9. Remove from the oven, allow the buns to cool, and enjoy!

How to Store

Store homemade hamburger buns in an airtight container or bag at room temperature for up to 3-5 days. For longer storage, freeze the buns in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2-3 months. Thaw buns at room temperature. I recommend toasting the buns to freshen them up before serving if they were previously frozen.
